Description

Conflict resolution project bringing together various community groups to discuss the sensitive issues of religion and ethnicity underlying many of the ‘civil unrests’ in Nigeria. Through community dramas, focus group discussions, and key in-depth interviews, various groups and individuals were engaged in dialogue and (self) analysis concerning questions like: what are the root causes of the perennial ethnic and religious violence, who are behind it, who are affected mostly, what can the Nigerian government do to promote good neighbourliness and change the ethno-religious swords into ploughshares?

Key Results

  • The project succeeded in establishing dialogue between groups that had moved to distinct areas and hardly have been in day-to-day contact since the last ethnic-religious conflicts in Kaduna and Kano States.
  • The participatory techniques used were effective in generating debate, providing enlightenment, and questioning stereotypes. Participants indicated to have learned a lot.
